Bernd Fuerst has been associated with the team since 2002 (which is when the Higgins's
were also members of the Naples Tiger Sharks for the first time). At that time, the team had
far fewer members and was struggling to stay afloat. Over the past five years, he has
watched the team grow to its present size and he has spent many hours watching swimmers
(especially his daughter, Avery) develop their techniques. Coach Bernd is entering his third
year as an assistant swim coach for the Naples Tiger Sharks. Coach Bernd in an excellent
all -around athlete but had had limited experience with swimming. However, his analytical
mind and his ability to understand the mechanics of a stroke make him a valuable assistant
coach for Coach Jane. He was born in Rastatt, Germany and raised in Gaggenau, Germany
( a town on the edge of the Black Forrest). Though he has never lived in the States, he has
spent half of his life within the US European military community. His mother tongue is, of
course, German but he speaks English fluently (as well as quite passable French and

SHAPE, Belgium (1996-2000), Sigonella, Sicily (1993-1996) amd Landstuhl, Germany
